The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the national museum of the Netherlands, invites applications for the

MANFRED & HANNA HEITING SCHOLARSHIP

Objective:
The advancement of photo-historical research by prospective curators from the Netherlands or abroad using the original photographs in the National Photo Collection in the Rijksmuseum.

The Manfred & Hanna Heiting Fund enables the Rijksmuseum to award 2 scholarships every year. The aim of this postgraduate scholarship is to stimulate photo-historical research of the highest quality. The research must result in an article in the field of classical photography. It should be related to the original objects in the extensive and important collection of the Rijksmuseum, and where possible to objects in other collections. This could be an in-depth study of one photograph or photo book and/or its distribution; on a series of photographs or part of an oeuvre; on the aesthetic or technical aspects of photography; or on the wider context of a photo book or album. The international research bursary is for a period of 6 months. The researcher will work independently and will be allocated a place in the reading room of the Rijksprentenkabinet (Print Room) and have access to all the museum’s collections and library.

The Rijksprentenkabinet (Print Room) of the Rijksmuseum has housed the National Photo Collection since 1996. This collection currently comprises more than 100,000 photographs, mainly from the 19th century and over 5000 20th-century photographs. The collection is extremely broad and varied, comprising a large range of subjects and various applications; from portrait daguerreotypes to amateur snapshots, and travel albums to photo-books. In 2005, the Rijksmuseum acquired an important series of over 450 original 20th century photographic prints. Famous photographers like André Kertész, Brassaï, Robert Capa, László Moholy-Nagy, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Weegee, William Klein, Cas Oorthuys and Eva Besnyö are represented.

The collection – coverage and highlights:

  1. International art photography 19th century, 1839-1914, Baldus, Le Gray; Fenton, Julia Margaret Cameron, Asser and Breitner.
  2. Surveys of Dutch, French, British, American, Italian, German, East European and Japanese photography in the 19th century and early 20th century.
  3. An extensive collection of photographically illustrated books from the period1839-1900 (formerly the Joseph and Hartkamp collections): c. 2500 volumes from Europe, the United States and Japan, including mounted original photographs and photo-mechanical prints.
  4. 19th-century travel albums from the Dutch East Indies, the Middle East and Asia.
  5. The picturalists Stieglitz, Demachy, Kuhn, Coburn, Annan and other foreign photographers in the Netherlands.
  6. Interface with the arts: engravings and etchings, drawings, photographs as teaching materials in 19th-century art schools, photographic art reproductions, photographs of sculpture etc.
  7. 20th-century collection: photographs and a collection of photo books; photographs by the ‚Ondergedoken Camera‘ (underground camera) group: work produced illegally by Dutch photographers during the final year of the Second World War in the Netherlands. Post-1945 Dutch documentary photography; Dutch photography is represented by early work by such photographers as Emmy Andriesse, Ed van der Elsken, Johan van der Keuken and Eva Besnyö; photo commissions on Dutch history from the period 1979 to date; international 20th century photography: Man Ray, Blumenfeld, Krull, Kertész, Capa, Eugene Smith, Moholy-Nagy, William Klein etc.

High quality standards will be expected of both the research and the trainee [proposal / proof of earlier published research / references / interim report].
The honorarium will be comparable to that of a junior curator, scale 10.1 (€ 2402 gross per month).
